Upgraded to WordPress 2.8

Posted in Blogging on Jun 20, 2009

I finally managed to upgrade to WordPress 2.8 yesterday. My first attempt to upgrade three days ago had failed due to lack of disk space, so I needed to upgrade my hosting plan first. Before, I used the cheapest hosting plan available at a local hosting company, with only US$5 per year I got 25MB disk space and 1Gb monthly bandwidth. Now after upgrade I have 100MB disk space with 4GB monthly bandwidth, it costs me about US$15 per year. It’s still cheap, I think.

Anyway, after upgrading my hosting plan I immediately upgraded my site to WordPress 2.8. Here’s what I did:

  • First, I deactivated all plugins at my WP dashboard
  • Second, I went to Control Panel and upgraded using Fantastico Deluxe
  • Lastly, I reactivated all of my plugins

That’s it, all done within minutes! That was my first time upgrade experience and I didn’t know it was so easy to be done. So far everything is going fine including my theme and plugins. I didn’t have to reinstall anything. Now that I have extra space left I may try to add some more plugins :)

Congrats on your successful upgrade! I’m still stuck with WP 2.7 cos my host server doesn’t have this Fantastico thing. I usually upgrade manually by following the guides on WordPress, but it’s a heck of a time and I get nervous everytime I do it. :-)

So, any difference between the recent and the previous versions?

Thanks Marlene. I’ll be nervous too if I have to do manual upgrade, can’t stand the process. So yes, Fantastico helps a lot :)

Anyway, the most noticeable difference (I think) is now we are able to search themes based on category and install them directly from dashboard. It is useful if you like themes from wp-themes.com. Haven’t tried it though since I use themes from other sources. The widget section is better too. Now we can easily drag and drop widgets between sidebars. It’s good since I have two sidebars.

I heard there’s a plugin that can do automatic upgrade, maybe you can try it. Good luck with your upgrade, should you wish to do it :)

I upgraded from within the WP admin panel. I’m fairly sure I didn’t have a plugin to do that either.

Go and have a look there, it was all automatic. I just clicked and ran. Everything is (or at least seems to) work.

Yes you’re right, I forgot to mention we can update directly from WP dashboard. I used Fantastico based on my hosting costumer service advise :)
